Local construction conglomerate Shwe Taung Development Co Ltd will finance an underpass below Pyay road, the company said.
The underpass will be built between the Institute of Education compound in Kamaryut township and Junction Square.
It will be operated by Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) under the supervision of the Yangon Regional Government.
“To build Yangon as a developed and modern city, we are building a lot of overhead bridges. Underpasses are also needed to be established to preserve the pleasant and natural environment of the city,” Shwe Taung said in a statement.
However, the company didn’t disclose how much money it will be putting into the project.
The company said the underpass below Pyay road, which is one of the busiest roads in Yangon and is always crowded with vehicles and pedestrians, will ensure the safety of pedestrians and ease traffic during school hours.
The underpass will be 30 metres long, three meters wide and three metres high.
Singapore-based Surbana Jurong will work as the designer and technical partner for the project, Shwe Taung said.
The company said engineers from Myanmar will have a chance to observe the international standard underpass construction process through the involvement of a foreign firm.
The project will take six months to complete and Shwe Taung said the construction work will not aggravate traffic jam near the constructing area. If any task has to be performed on the road it will be carried out at night, the company said.
